LIBS can predict the elemental abundances of samples through analyzing acquired emission spectra. Analytical precision of LIBS depends on the spectral quality such as S/N ratio and wavelength resolution of the spectra. In this study we investigated the effect of S/N ratio and wavelength resolution on elemental abundance prediction when partial least squares regression (PLS) is used in spectra analysis. The results indicate that low-S/N ratio decreases the prediction precision. However, the prediction precision does not decrease even though the wavelength resolution is low enough that individual emission lines are not separated. This suggests that high-wavelength-resolution spectrometer is not required for LIBS system in using PLS, leading to decrease in the size and weight of LIBS
