In contrast, basaltic breccias tend to represent the average (approximately true) basalt composition because they consist of mixtures of Mg-rich lower layer and Fe-rich upper layer of the basalt flow. Thus, basaltic breccias are more suitable to estimate the true basalt composition. The thickness of the basalt included in lunar meteorite MET 01210 is estimated to be 50-100 m. Spectral analysis of a Mg-rich basalt breccia and an Fe-rich crystalline basalt shows that they can be spectroscopically distinguished by lateral shift of reflectance spectra and the associated individual absorption bands.
