However few laboratory experiments and/or numerical simulations have been done to examine whether or not the Z-model's streamlines actually express the excavation flow. A numerical simulation of impact onto granular materials by the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is suitable to trace directly the trajectories of target particles. Then a numerical code was developed to simulate impact onto granular materials. The results show that the target particles move along the Z-model's streamlines in the following cases: Z = 3 (effective origin of flow (EOF) is located at the target surface) or Z = 2.7 (EOF is located at the depth of one projectile radius).
