A spectral correlation analysis was improved to estimate the lunar mare filling thickness and crustal features by means of global scale. In this article, assuming a terrain density of 2.9 g/cm(sup 3) a multi-layer surface-mass density approximation is introduced into the analysis of upward continuation to estimate the terrain potential from a lunar surface topography model with spherical harmonics of degrees and orders up to 110. Using this approach, the lunar free air gravity anomalies obtained by Lunar Prospector mission can be separated into terrain positive correlated and terrain negative correlated components. The mare basalt filling thickness can be obtained from the terrain negative correlated coefficients. Adopting Airy-Heiskanen isostasy model and a mantle density contrast of 0.5 g/cm(sup 3), the global thickness distribution and compensation status of lunar crust under the surface are estimated together with Moho relief from the data sets of free air gravity and surface topography.
