This paper investigates flight planning for the HSFD vehicle, applying technical considerations to the selection of a launch method. An air-launch method and a balloon drop method are examined. A guidance law was designed for each launch method and flight simulations were performed. These investigations made it clear that although the air-launch method can produce the required flight experiment under ideal conditions, the method breaks down in certain cases, such as departures from nominal separation or thrust performance. On the other hand, the balloon-drop method satisfies the requirements of the flight experiment in all cases, including likely variations from the ideal.
