Space Activities Commission, Japan strongly demanded improving a quality assurance of a nozzle throat insert of a solid rocket motor made of isotropic graphite. After intensive research and development, JIS Z 2356 'Method of automatic ultrasonic inspection for graphite ingot' was enacted. However since it requires a large amount of inspection time, this standard has been developed utilizing a phased array system for reducing inspection time and improving inspection reliability.
