The LIF represents the jet structure very well except for helium jets. It is shown that striped patterns of LIF in the supersonic region of the jet result from the Doppler shift of the rovibronic absorption lines of I_2 due to the flow velocity component in the direction of the laser beam and that the flow velocity can be determined from the observed inclination of the stripes.
