It is used for remotely detecting the 3-degrees-of-freedom rotational motion of a spacecraft model mounted on the spherical air-bearing. When a spacecraft model is mounted on the spherical air-bearing, its center of gravity should be coincident with the center of the air-bearing. This makes it possible to obtain the motion of the test model around its center of gravity by measuring the surface motion of the sphere. The attitude measuring system consists of a pattern printed on the surface of the sphere and detection heads fixed along rectangular coordinate axes with their zero point set at the center of the sphere. The motion of the sphere around its center is resolved into the shifts around these three rectangular axes, each shift is detected by each detection head, and then the output data of each detection head are processed for indicating the original three-dimensional motion. The shifts around the pitch and yaw axes are detected by optical detection heads and continuously pen-recorded with angle resolution of 0.1 degree. The roll rate around the roll axis is magnetically picked up and measured by an electronic counter in a periodical measuring mode. The system design, specification, construction and test results of the attitude measuring system are discussed in this paper.
