Since the Doppler shift is clearly different for ducted and non-ducted propagations, an existence of the duct can be easily detected. In case of the non-ducted propagation, the wave normal tends to direct within the resonance cone angle, where the electron temperature of the plasma is highly effective to the refractive index and therefore to the Doppler freguency shift.
