X-1からの軟X線を観測することはSCO X-1までの星間空間とSCO X-1のまわりの中性ガスの存在(これら両者合わせてSCO X-1までの中性ガスの線密度と言う)を知る上に重要である。われわれはこれまでの3回のロケット実験により軟X線を観測し同種の観測装置,統一的なデータ解析法によりSCO X-1までの中性ガスの線密度を得ることが出来た。この3回の観測結果はガスの線密度が時間的に変動していることを明かにした。もしSCO X-1に対して一様高温プラズマのモデルをとるとするとその最低値は5×10^<20> H/cm^2 以下であり,その最高値は5×10^<21> H/cm^2
