Temperature increases sometimes up to 1,500K, depending on the magnitude of the horizontal geomagnetic component. Temperature increase seems to decrease gradually toward evening. Joule dissipation in the ionosphere which is given by Q_j = j^2/σ_3 is not enough to explain the electron temperature increase.
