This paper reviews the Japanese Halley comet mission, which was the beginning of the Japanese interplanetary exploration program. The Japanese space science team was quite anxious to carry out the interplanetary mission after having completed many scientific satellite projects. Comet Halley with its well-defined orbit and high activity, became the first target to explore for these scientists. However, they had to complete many tasks before sending their two spacecraft to the comet at the beginning and middle of 1985. The launching of both spacecraft, Sakigake and Suisei, was a success. The first interplanetary missions required considerable effort in many science and technology fields. The encounters with comet Halley took place on 8 and 11 March 1986. The results obtained by these spacecraft have been very fruitful, and, when combined with other measurements obtained by GIOTTO, VEGA and ground based observation, etc., they will contribute to further our scientific understanding of comet Halley. |
