Since then, observations using developed balloon-borne optical ozone sondes were performed at Sanriku Balloon Center every year until 1999. From 1994 to 1998,observations at Svalbard in the Arctic were also performed. The balloon-borne optical ozone sondes measure the intensity of solar radiation at ozone Hartley band absorption at every 30-40m in the vertical. Due to a smoothing procedure used for data analysis, the vertical resolution of obtained ozone profiles are limited to 1km.
