The results showed that the observed values of these components were lower and their vertical gradients were steeper, compared with those obtained over Japan. This fact suggests that the tropospheric air intruded into the stratosphere by strong upwelling in the equatorial region are transported poleward slowly and that the diabatic subsidence of air in the polar vortex compress the vertical gradients of the concentrations. The age of stratospheric air in the polar vortex which characterizes the time scale of stratospheric transport of airmass originated in the troposphere was estimated to be about 4-5 years by using CO_2 concentration. Tight but distinct correlation between CH_4 and N_2O concentrations were observable in the polar vortex and in the stratosphere over Japan.
