The purity of distilled zinc, the rate of evaporation, the temperature gradient in a vacuum distillation furnace, and the effect of additional elements on starting temperature of distillation were measured. The results obtained are as follows. (1) Five nine zinc may be obtained by the distillation of four nine zinc. (2) The temperature in the molten zinc and condenser may be changed as soon as vaporization begins. (3) The rate of evaporation may be 60 to 80 pct. of the theoretical maximum corresponding to the measured temperature nearly at the pressure of 0.1mm Hg with a high-frequency induction furnace, but it may be much less with an indirect heating furnace. (4) The observed temperature which the distillation begins can be increased by an addition of aluminium, and also, may be increased by addition of a small amount of magnesium. This may depend upon the component at the surface of molten zinc alloys during rapid evaporation. (Received August 23, 1952) |
