The soil was packed into a bottomless wooden box which was connected to a fixed point by a spring and was set on a metal plate. When we pulled the plate horizontally, the box travelled with the plate by the action of the cohesion. When the cohesion was overcome by the spring, the box was pulled back. The cohesion was found from the elongation of the spring. It was found that there are three stages, (1), (2), (3) with respect bo the relation between cohesin and the moisture content of the soil. In (1), the cohesion is kept nearly constant; in (2), the cohesion incrases with the increase of the moisture untill it reaches a maximum; in (3), it falls down rapidly with a slight increase of moisture. A remarkable decrease in cohesion was observed when the electric direct current was transmitted in the soil, taking the metal plate to be a cathode. |
