A general theory of the dielectric constant of simple ionic crystals is proposed. The energy change due to the electric field, or the dielectric constant, is expressed by the quadratic form of two quantities p_1 and p_2, which represent the dipole moments due to the displacement of ions and the deformation of ions in the electric field respectively. Physical meaning is given for three quantities appearing in our theory as the coefficients in the quadratic terms. Using this formalism it is possible to compute vibrational frequencies of lattice, the effective charge of ions and the interaction constant between an excess electron and lattice vibrations in NaCl crystals. |
