内容記述 When tendon from rat tails is made to swell in dilute and solution, as in the case of Collagen extraction, its X-ray diffraction pattern changes as well as its external dimenstion. After about 10 minutes of swelling, wet tendon no longer shows clear X-ray diffraction pattern, and at the same time the dimensional change becomes slower. When tendon which was swollen for a period of less then an hour is dried while keeping the length constant, it recovers its regularity and the X-ray diffraction pattern becomes about the same as that of dry native tendon. Frozen dried tendon and tendon which was dehydrated with alochol, showed an X-ray diffraction pattern which is different frome that of dry native tendon. It was rather similar to the diffraction pattern of tendon which was made to swell for more then an hour and then dried. Fibres of collgen were prepared frome surface monolayer spread over acetate buffer of pH 4.0 and 4.8. They shoed only weak meridional diffraction of 3Å together with a general back ground showing amorphous structure. Diffraction patterns were observed by placing dry native tendon and frozen dried tendon with their axes along the beam of X-ray from the source. Ring patterns were obtained. Their radii concided well with respective which did not appear in the ring pattern. This seems to indicate that polypeptide chains in the tendon are roughly parallel to the axis of tendon.
