This paper describes the basic studies and developments for the ATC automation system that will be implemented at the Tokyo Area Control Center with its initial operation in 1968. Based on the system design philosophy obtained from our study, a real-time computer data processing system has been adopted from the first phase of this automation. Particular emphasis has been placed on the system-reliability and the man-machine interface, both having been recognized as the most important factors in such a realtime system.
