For the determination of the thermal conductivity of high polymers, an apparatus with a cylindrical symmetry was designed and constructed in our laboratory. The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of commercial samples of polymethyl methacrylate and polyethylene were measured with this apparatus. The thermal conductivity vs. temperature curve for the amorphous polymethyl methacrylate shows a gradual increase in the thermal conductivity with the increase in the temperature, but the curve has a sharp bend near the glass transition temperature of the polymer. On the contrary, the thermal conductivity of the semi-crystalline polyethylene decreases monotonously with the temperature, following the reciprocal temperature relationship valid for the crystalline solids of the low molecular weight. |
