The most important point is that heat generated by the work of deformation causes temperature rise, nonuniform temperature distributions and hence nonuniform distributions in shear strain in the specimen. Taking the effects of temperature rise into consideration, the solid cylindrical specimen test is preferred to the tubular specimen and differential test, and shorter guage length is desirable.
