The purpose of this work is to study experimentally the effects of the oxidizer flow on the combustion rate of solid carbon for which a large amount of internal burning is expected to occur. Combustion rates of high-porosity carbon (porosity of 50%) are measured. A test specimen, whose surface temperature is raised to a given value by external heat sources, is set in the stagnation region of an impinging oxidizing flow and burned at atmospheric pressure. The velocity gradient of the impinging oxidizing flow is varied from 15.8 to 1480 sec^<-1>; the surface temperature from 1000 to 1800°K. These combustion rates are compared with those of low-porosity carbon measured formerly. In the lower temperature range where internal burning is important, the combustion rate of high-porosity carbon is largely affected by the velocity gradient of the impinging oxidizing flow. The amount of internal burning increases with the velocity gradient. |
