A gas-flow differential thermal analysis (DTA) apparatus, designed and constructed in this laboratory, for studying thermal degradation of high polymers is described. The DTA apparatus featuring atmosphere control has two distinct characteristics, that is flat metal cells and thermocouples spot-welded directly to the cell. The changes in thermal properties due to physical and chemical reactions for a linear polyethylene Marlex 50 was measured by this DTA appartus. In a heating DTA curve, an exothermic peak due to the oxidation of polyethylene was observed at about 180℃. while the sample was heated at a constant rate of about 1℃./min. in a stream of oxygen. It is found that the amount of crystalline region in polyethylene decreases as a result of the oxidation above its melting point. |
