Thermal expansion and specific heat of tungsten oxide were observed-quantitatively in the neighborhood of 710℃, which temperature, as reported in the previous paper, seems to be the Curie point where the spontaneous polarization of this substance vanishes. The thermal expansion coefficient becomes almost infinitely negative at 755℃ and the amount of the contraction is about 0.12%. The specific heat, on the other hand, shows a peak at 728℃ and the amount of the anomalous heat capacity is about 450 cal/mol. These results are similar with those observed for barium titanate at the 120℃ transition. The above mentioned values of the transition temperature are a little higher than reported previously, perhaps owing to the high purity of the present sample. Although a distinct expansion is observed near 330℃, any anomaly of the specific heat is not observed near this temperature. (Received September 10, 1951) |
