In order to investigate the associated-pair-theory of sensitization proposed by F. A. Kroger. J. H. Shulman and their co-workers, the effects of sensitizers, Bi and Pb, on the emission spectra of Sm in CaS were studied. The spectra of CaS-Sm, CaS-Sm-Pb and CaS-Sm-Bi at 20℃ and -180℃, excited with 3650Å, were taken with a large spectrograph. At both temperatures, the effects of sensitizers were found in the fine structures of the spectra. There was observed little change in the wave-length of the individual spectral lines, but some of the lines extinguished and several new ones were found. The change of fine structures was different according as the sensitizer was Pb or Bi. And this effect was much larger with Pb, while Bi predominated in the efficiency of sensitization. At the liquid air temperature, the new lines found in CaS-Sm-Pb became distinct. The wave-numbers of the spectra are given on the list. These results support the associated-pair-theory, and the mechanism of sensitization seems to be a sort of collision of the second kind between sensitizer and activator by means of thermal vibration.
