The scale effects on deep-drawing characteristics of circular shells of inside diameter varying from 20 to 100 mm, are studied in both cases of constant pressure holding and rigid holding. The blanks were turned out from aluminum strip of 99.5, 99.78% purity and of 0.8 mm thickness. The results are as follows (1) The minimum allowable peripheral holding pressure h_l is found to be a linear function of a variable [D_0-(d_2+2r_a)). (2) The maximum drawing force Pm when either the minimum allowable holding pressure was applied, or the maximum allowable rigid holding clearance was used, have a linear relation with a variable (D_o-(d_2+r_d)) The Pm in the latter case is about 20~ higher than that of the former. (3) Moreover, the limiting drawing ratio [(d_1+t_0)/D_o) u* in the case of rigid holding drawing is 2~4% higher than that or constant pressure holding. (4) The suitable clearance fol rigid holding is 10~20% of blank thickness, and larger clearance are allowed when the smaller blank was drawn, or the drawing diameter was smaller than 30~40 mm.
