We can obtain approximately the deep-drawing stresses for a circular blank of sheet metal from its tensile property, but can not estimate generally the deep-drawability from such simple property. This is mainly due to that the strength of the weakest section where the drawing force is carried, is largely affected by: (a) inclination between side wall of the shell and punch, (b) complexity of state of stresses acting there, and it can hardly be estimated precisely from the tensile property. To know the deep-drawability, therefore, we determine the drawing limit experimentally by drawing many circular blanks of various diameters by conical die and punch. This process, however, requires labour and large number of blanks. To save these, we draw blanks having a diameter over the drawing limit (the ratio of punch diameter and blank diameter is about 0.37) by the conical die and measured the circumferential strain on periphery at the moment of break down of the shells. This strain is found to be practically available for a comparing scale of deep-drawability of sheet metal. (Received December 10, 1952) |
