The characteristic behavior of the spring in this case is that the correction for the velocities and the damping coefficients for the two waves have their maximum values near x=1.8 and vanish at x=1, where x=λ/2πr, λ denoting the wave length, r the radius of the coil. For x smaller than a certain value there exists no oscillatory motion. The damping is larger for the extensional wave than for the torsional wave because bending and torsion of the wire are coupled for the former. The velocity corrections and dampings increase with the ratio of the radius of the wire to that of the coil.
