Sylvine prisms, having an apex angle of ca. 72°, were made from synthetic single crystals and the infrared absorption was measured up to 20μ. Dispersion, transmittance of the prism, the width of slits used, and optical slit width, in the wavelength region from 6 to 16μ, were compared with those when a rocksalt prism with an apex angle of 60° was used. Resolving power was not much different from that for a rocksalt prism. This conclusion was experimentally verified by measuring the absorption intensity of polyethylene at 726, 1375 and 1465cm^<-1>. Furthermore, the intensity of stray radiation was measured in the wavelength region from 13 to 19.5μ, and was found to amount to 79% of total radiation at 16μ, and to 36% at 19μ. Use of a shutter, transparent to shorter wavelength radiation, to decrease the effect of stray radiation is discussed. (Received January 31, 1953) |
