The optimum temperature of hot extrusion of presintered tablets of cermet is 1400 to 1450℃. The grain size and shape of titanium carbide in the extruded cermets are almost dependent on the sintering conditions of the tablet, and the effect of the extrusion is very slight. The hot extrusion decreases the porosity and increases the strength of cermet. Solution and precipitation of carbon in cermet from the graphite container and die was practically negligible. An apparatus for hot extrusion of cermet was designed as to obtain the elemental data during extrusion. The measured pressure during extrusion did not depend on extrusion velocity, but on extrusion temperature in the case of same composition.
