The results of an extended series of experiments that were conducted in connection with the masking effect of noise with a continuous spectrum upon a pure tone are described in detail and, (1) the existence of an additive property in the masking effect is proved, (2) an empirical formula for the masking effect of a pure tone upon another pure tone was derived, (3) the relation between the masking effect of a pure tone and that of noise was thoroughly studied. Further experiments are now under way in connection with the masking effect of noise with a spectrum that is not continuous, for example, impulsive noise and various complex noises, such as are met with in practice. |
