With the aid of a set of tuning forks and resonators of variable pitch, on the one hand, the singing sound emitted by a marine propeller was analysed on the sailing ships and on the other hand, the natural frequencies of various mcdes of vibration of the propeller blades were measured in detail. The authors had come to the conclusion that the origin of singing sound is a mode of free vibrations of one or two blades of a propeller and the natural frequencies of a propeller blade immersed in sea water is 30% lower than those in air. They had found also many remarkable charactors on singing propellers. |
