Using various kinds of warbling tones, an extensive series of measurement was made in order to determine (1) the effect of mean frequency of the warbling tone, (2) the effect of the width of the frequency modulation, (3) the effect of the modulation frequency or the rate of modulation per second, the results being shown in Figs. It is found, that the masking effect increases by increasing the modulation frequency, and at 40 per second to be nearly 15 db larger than that in the case of a pure tone. The other effects will readily be seen from the figures. In Appendix are given the results of determination of the thresholds of audibility of individuals during a long period of time extending over four months. |
