内容記述 The present investigation aimed at the experimental determination of the coefficients of solid viscosities of aluminium, duralmin, copper, and brass by means of the flexural vibrations of a bar, the resistance of a solid body due to damping being assumed to be proportional to the velocity of the deformation of that body. In analysing the result, the mathematical formula, deduced by one of the authors a few years ago, was employed. The experiment showed that the coefficient of solid viscosity is as small as 10^6 in C. G. S. units. This suggests that the resonance condition of a flying machine is detrimental to its behaviour, as no dissipation energy is radiated outwards from its boundary, while, at the same time the damping due to internal viscosity is too small in such a body. The experiment also showed that the damping constants of metals, even in such a high vacuum as 1/2000mm of mercury column, depends on the amplitude of the vibrations. The greater the amplitude, the greater becomes the coefficient of the solid viscosity. With the exception of those made by Honda and Konno and also those by Iokibe and Sakai, few measurements of solid viscosities of metals have been made. The theoretical and experimental investigations carried out by Barus, Voigt, and Cady are neither complete nor very satisfying. In our recent studies in the problem of shocks transmitted in a bar and other solid bodies, special attention was paid to the question of solid viscosity, the numerical data concerning which are very scanty, notwithstanding the pressing need for them. Acting on Professor Iwamoto's advice the solid viscosities of some metals have been measured with unusual accuracy. The metals experimented with were aluminium, duralmin, copper, and brass. The pressure in the vacuum chamber in which the vibration tests were made was about 1/2000mm of mercury column.
