It is found that the ascending velocity of the cylindrical bubble is much less than that of the ordinary bubbles in the infinite liquid or in the liquid contained in a tube, and it ascends with a constant velocity independent of its length. The ascending velocity of the cylindrical bubble vanishes at a definite, finite value of the diameter which is characteristic to the liquid. We call this diameter the critical diameter of the liquid. The critical diameter is deduced from the general equation of the capillarity as the result of the equilibrium between the buoyancy exerted to the upper, curved part of the bubble and the surface tension of the liquid. It is: d_0=1.2950, a=√<(2α)/(ρg)>, where d_0 is the critical diameter, α the surface tension of the liquid, ρ its density, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.
