In the first part of the present paper, I have discussed the steady irrotational continuous flow of an incompressible perfect fluid past a flat plate placed in a stream between two parallel plane walls and I have calculated the lifting force acting on the plate, by making use of the ordinary BLASIUS' formula. In order to see how the boundary walls exert the influence upon the lift, I have carried out numerical calculations for the lift in a rather special case in which the mid-point of the plate lies on the central line of the channel, since such a case is important from the experimental standpoint of view, and I have arrived at the results that the lift on the plate in the channel is generally more or less greater than the lift which the same plate would experience when it were placed in an unbounded stream; in other words, the lift on the plate is always more or less increased due to the presence of the boundary walls of the channel. These results are exactly the same as those obtained by ROSENHEAD, who, as mentioned in the Introduction, has also carried out numerical calculations for the same special case as ours. However, it should be remembered that ROSENHEAD's general expression for the lift is erroneous, that is, his expression for the lift is not valid for general cases, but is valid only for a special case where the mid-point of the plate lies on the central line of the channel, so that the results of his numerical calculations are, for the most part, correct, except the approximate values for ⊿ k_L/k_L. Next, I have investigated two limiting cases when either of the boundary walls of the channel removes to infinity. By removing the upper wall to infinity, I have obtained the flow past a flat plate placed in the vicinity of a plane wall bounding the fluid on the lower side of the plate, about which the full discussions have already been made by me, in conjunction with Messrs. T. NAGAMIYA and Y. TAKENOUTI, in one of previous papers, and I have obtained the expressions for various quantities found in the previous paper just mentioned as the limiting forms of the corresponding expressions for the channel problem. In like manner, I have obtained, by removing the lower boundary to infinity, the flow past a flat plate near a wall bounding the fluid on the upper side of the plate, which has also been investigated in another previous paper, and I have shown that, as in the former limiting case, the expressions for various quantities obtained in the paper just mentioned can be found as the limiting forms of the corresponding expressions for the channel problem. | |||||||
