As regards the strength of the ribs whose webs are lightened with holes, proper method of computation has not, as far as the authors are aware, been undertaken and recourse must so far be had to loading test which would of necessity incur much labour and expense. The authors recommend to calculate them as Vierendeel framework. Part I. Chap. 1. Strength of the rectangular Vierendeel frame with 4 bays-as it is mostly used in the wing rib--is calculated. Chap. 2. Neglecting the terms of small influence, the approximate formula is deduced which saves much labour and time of calculation. Chaps. 3--4. The method of strength calculation is applied to the ribs tested to destruction by the authors. Chap. 5. The trapezoidal Vierendeel frame is calculated for their strength. Chap. 6. The error due to taking the rib as rectangular frame instead of trapezoidal is discussed, and shown to be small in the usual ribs, such as those tested by the authors. Chap. 7. The errors due to testing the rib with spar sections are also shown to be neglegible. Chap. 8. Elevating the supports from the bottom of the lower flange to the mid-point of the spar section give; an error of minor significance. Chap. 9. The error due to the load distributed only on the pressure side of the rib is discussed. The only error is in the load on the vertical member in the ribs of both the statically determinate, and Vierendeel type. The difference is usually of minor significance, and the conclusion sim lifies, to a great extent, the deign of the rib te ter. Part II. Chaps. 10-11. Rib; of the R. A. F. 15 section were tested to destruction by the rib tester designed by the authors. The pressure distributions were as umed as triangular, the apex lying at the points distant oc, 1/8c, 1/4c, 3/8c, 1/2c respectively from the leading edge (c means the chord length). The deflections were plotted by meanes of he deflection recorder designed also by the author. The rib tester and the deflection recorder are briefly described. |
