International Conference Room, Kitakyushu International Conference Center), Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan, In order to operate a satellite in sub-low earth orbit (sub-LEO), it is required to design an optimum ion engine to compensate the drag of the upper atmosphere. The air breathing ion engine (ABIE) is one of promising candidates for such an ion engine. However, the optimum design rule has not been established. Because ground experiments are difficult for ABIE, numerical simulation is a useful approach for the development.
