The turbulence intensity and integral scale were about ten times larger than those obtained by the conventional method and the turbulence Reynolds number, R(sub lambda), reached about 530. Due to the large integral scales of the present shear flows, the turbulence energy decayed downstream even when its total strain tau = (X/U(sub c))(partial derivative of U with respect to Y) was far larger than about four, as pointed out by Tavoularis & Karnik. When the total strain was smaller than about four, the power law was more successful than the exponential law in describing the decay of turbulence energy.
