A single low-speed streak is generated in a laminar boundary layer by means of a small piece of mesh set normal to the wall, and symmetric and anti-symmetric wave modes are excited through the wall orifice. The instability characteristics of the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, which are essentially governed by the instabilities of the normal-to-wall and spanwise velocity distributions respectively, are presented.
