The flow is steady and symmetric along both streamwise centerlines through the center of each square bar and the center between two adjacent square bars at small Reynolds numbers. However, the flow becomes asymmetric along the centerlines between two adjacent square bars at the Reynolds numbers larger than a critical value in some cases, where couplings of two adjacent wakes are observed. Otherwise, the flow becomes periodic in time at the Reynolds numbers larger than another critical value, where the wakes behind the square bars are oscillatory. It is found by numerical simulations that vortices are shed synchronously from every couple of adjacent square bars in the same phase or in the anti-phase depending upon the distance between the bars when the flow is periodic in time. It is confirmed that the coupling of two adjacent wakes occurs due to the pitchfork bifurcation, while the synchronous shedding of vortices occurs due to the Hopf bifurcation.
