The new nozzles are considered much more efficient for the larger nozzle expansion area ratio than existing ones. Given the concerns over degraded performance due to a slower flow of exhaust gas caused by shock waves in the overlapped area between the modules that constitute a cluster nozzle, we evaluated the effect of each module’s overlap ratio on nozzle performance based on an examination using nitrogen gas. Our experimental and analytical results by cold gas revealed that the plug cluster nozzle having a low overlap ratio offers better performance than the bell nozzle having the same effective expansion ratio. In order to understand the combustion gas characteristics of the plug cluster nozzle, we plan to perform firing tests.
