To realize the active debris removal system, JAXA plans a test flight experiment of EDT utilizing the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV, Kounotori), which is called Kounotori Integrated Tether Experiments (KITE). In the KITE mission, 720m-long tether is deployed from HTV. A passive braking mechanism is utilized for smooth termination of tether deployment. The braking force and braking distance must be evaluated for estimating the behavior of on-orbit tether deployment. On-ground tests for braking mechanism and numerical simulation of tether deployment are conducted in order to evaluate the characteristic. In this paper, development status of the braking mechanism is
