Cells were lyophilized and exposed to Co-60 gamma-rays with doses up to 12 kGy before the space flight. Almost at the end of the mission, the cells were mixed on board with liquid nutrient medium to activate the repair process, then incubated at room temperature of the spacelab for 11 hrs to allow the repair of the radiation-induced DNA damages. Afterwards the cells were stored at 4 C until landing. The survival of the cells activated in space increased significantly compared with the ground controls, suggesting that DNA repair system of this bacterium was enhanced under
