In the assessments of the impact of engine emissions on the atmospheric environments, data bases for the emissions not only of major species but also of trace species such as NOx, NOy, HCs are indispensable. The present ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) emissions regulation controls the total emissions of hydrocarbons during the takeoff and landing cycle. But, different hydrocarbon species in engine exhaust have different magnitudes of effects on atmospheric environments. Therefore, species resolved measurements of hydrocarbons in aircraft engine exhaust are required. In the present investigation, hydrocarbons and aldehydes in burned gases from a model can combustor burning Jet-A spray from a pressure atomizer were measured by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to assess their applicability to the determination of hydrocarbons and aldehydes in aircraft exhausts. The effects of the methods of sampling, treatment, and analysis on the measurements are
