In carrying out the replacement, efforts were made to render the system automated and to increase its energy efficiency as much as possible. As a result: (1) Power savings are, at a tunnel stagnation pressure of 100 kPa, 3,000 kW and 5,000 kW for the main and auxiliary driving systems respectively; (2) The time required for starting and finishing have been substantially reduced, thus contributing to the enhancement of the tunnel operational efficiency; and that (3) The manpower needed for tunnel operation has been greatly reduced by an extensive automating of the Mach number control procedure. A feature of this procedure is incorporation of a feed-forward process derived from the analysis of the manual control data hitherto collected.
