Such data are particularly needed for the design of vertical-axis wind turbines, which operate under a wide range of angles of attack and various Reynolds numbers. The ultimate objective of this study is to establish an aerodynamic characteristics database for various airfoils using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This report represents the first stage of the study. Two-dimensional CFD was employed to estimate data for a symmetric airfoil for which data is already available in order to examine how accurate this method will be. The aerodynamic data obtained by CFD were employed as actual inputs for a calculation of wind turbine characteristics using BEM
