The activities of ICAO and CAEP (Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection) to enhance the present Chapter-3 requirements concerning the noise-level of aircraft are reaching conclusion. In this report, the latest trends in the standard-enhancement and noise-reducing technologies are described. Regarding the noise-reducing technologies, development of a high bypass-ratio fan-engine has noticeably contributed to the reduction of the fan-noise. Further improvements through optimization of the numerical ratio of rotary to stationary blades, their spacing, setting-angles of the stationary blades, and the strut-shape are in progress. Regarding noise-reduction of the jet-engine itself, studies include trials of the various mixer-shapes and application of a long cowl. The method of introducing flow from outside to slow down ejected gas by combining the mixer and the ejector is considered effective in reducing noise of the super-sonic transporters. Study on sound absorbing liner made from porous compound-materials is also in progress. These improvements are the extension of existing technologies and thus are limited in potential.
