Toyama International Conference Center), Toyama Japan, In this study, the aerodynamic design of an airfoil for a small blended-wing-body aircraft called novel-wing-body (NWB) is discussed. In our previous study, the three dimensional aerodynamic design of NWB was carried out using a typical supercritical airfoil. However, Shock waves near the leading edge of the outer wing appeared, and the wave drag increased. Therefore, the lift-to-drag ratio stayed small. In order to design an ideal airfoil for NWB, The design exploration by Genetic Algorithm (GA) is carried out in this study. Some types airfoils obtained by this exporation are applied to the 3D NWB geometry, and their acrodynamic characteristics are investigated using a three dimensional Navier-Stokes solver.
