An approximation theory for nonlinear evolution equations is discussed in relation to the Lax equivalence theorem for linear problems. This theory is applied to scalar conservation laws in several space variables. It follows that Boltzmann type approxi-mations as well as finite difference approximations converge to the physical weak solution which satisfies the entropy condition. |
